The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Meeting recap of Friday, October 4, 2019
We enjoyed having three visitors today: Jake Ouellette, our speaker, Tom Eagen, a friend of Ray Hamlin, and Jolene Everett, a Rotarian from Palatka, Florida.

Sergeant at Arms Ed Smith was eager to fill the basket today. John and Emily were targeted as late arrivals but Emily had already scooted! It appeared that Ed was going to fine Susan for not having a badge but he actually delivered her brand-new badge. Bob was fined for his big winnings in a church raffle but he also put in $10 to represent  the 7 and the 3 in his latest birthday. Happy birthday Bob! Richard deposited $5 to thank all those who make the club tick and also a simple happy $5.  Dr. Joe was happy to see Dr. Nii. Perter the Poet was in fine form to report a balance of $166.30,

“Saving bottles and cans for Clynk, you know
Makes a lot of ‘cents’!
So fill up those green bags before you go,
and to Hannaford carry them thence!”

Melanie is headed to Florida and Susan is headed to Vermont. Nancy was happy to make Jolene’s acquaintance. Jolene was happy she noticed the Rotary sign and flag in front of Bintliff’s. Tracy will take the online route to recruit members to work at Ogunquitfest on Saturday, October 26. George, the Grinch, hopes it is cold here in November as he will be in the Caribbean for a couple of weeks! Nii was happy to be with us.

Pete was in the running for $77 but drew the 10 of Hearts and the 5 of Clubs.

The second YETI tumbler from the last meeting was on the auction block. Dr. Joe won a hotly contested bidding war against Richard and Pete with a bid of $25.

Bob briefly described the upcoming District Conference on October 5 and Ogunquitfest on October 26. Erin suggested decorating Rotary Park and George and John will help; Bob cleverly added the idea of kinky boots (get it?) on a scarecrow. At its meeting next Thursday, the board will begin an exploration of the club’s mission; Bob asks any interested members to attend. John will get a firm date from Jonathan’s for the holiday luncheon. Bob read thank you notes from Great Works Regional Trust, Friends Forever, and York County Habitat for Humanity. Hilton-Winn Farm is seeking volunteers for its October 12 event.

Amanda introduced her colleague at Partners Bank, Jake Ouellette, vice chair of the board of the Sanford Mainers summer collegiate league baseball team.  Since 2005, the Mainers have been highly competitive in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, an entity second only to the Cape Cod Summer League. Eight veterans of the league have reached the majors. The team offers four-day youth camps for a fee of $75. A non-profit group, the Mainers rely on sponsorships, donations, souvenir sales, fund-raising events and housing for players provided by families in the area. Jake’s presentation was very interesting and highly informative. (Photo of Amanda, Bob and Jake below.)
