Cheryl Farley and Brad Kenney, Executive Artistic Director of the Ogunquit Playhouse, visited. Former member Lisa Roderick and her cousin Susan Stresl from Huntsville, Alabama also joined us. Brad spoke about the playhouse, the upcoming season and the vote in June on the re-zoning question.
Starting its 87th year, the playhouse is the largest non-profit performing arts organization in Maine. With 20-25 winter employees and over 200 summer employees, it operates on a $14 million spending budget.
Current zoning means that the structures of the playhouse are non-conforming. Zoning must change for the playhouse to be brought up to date. Brad states unequivocally that the theater cannot continue on the site if zoning does not change.
This season will include a “brand-new version” of Jersey Boys, 42nd Street with sets from London, Cabaret from Broadway, Murder on the Orient Express, a saucy version of Menopause the Musical, and a special surprise to be announced on opening night.
After Brad’s remarks, Richard fondly recalled special times at the playhouse when he was a young boy. Ed Smith remembered seeing Tallulah Bankhead. Pete told of the impressive work of emergency services. He noted that all the Clynk numbers are even at $172, 12000 containers and 123 lobster pots.
Nancy expressed concern about Mozambique area storms. Connie paid for tardiness. Melanie had the pleasure of being a 12 years old performer in Carousel; she is going to Ireland with her mom. Dr. Joe was happy that Biddeford- Saco made him an honorary member. He and Vickie will travel across Canada. Ed Seppa thanked John, Carol, Connie, and Joe for working on the Norm Wilkinson scholarship. Tracy spoke proudly of her neighbor who is serving in the U.S. Marines.
Ed Smith held the winning ticket. He saw $61 evaporate as he drew the 6 of Hearts and the 10 of Spades.
Tracy stood in for Erin who was away at a conference. This June, the Ogunquit Day in the Park will be called BonAire. We’ll pay $50 to have a booth on Saturday, June 15. About a half dozen members showed interest in manning the booth.
George moved to accept the 2019-2020 $37,308 annual budget; Ed Smith seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Melanie volunteered to serve on the 2-Cent Sale committee.
There will be a board meeting at the Chamber this Thursday at 4:30. A social will follow at 5:30. Ray Hamlin will present a classification talk on May 17.
