The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Recap of Thursday, January 18, 2024
We had two visitors today. Dick Cressey accompanied Brenda and Kent Bridges wanted to find out what we are all about; he was invited by Carole Aaron.

On the topic of the audacity of hope, Alice quoted the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” She also reminded us of Martin Luther King Jr’s words, “..Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.”

Hannah was good enough to bring pizza, salad and cookies for our lunch. She also shared some thoughts about gratitude from Doris Day, "Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty," and Maya Anjelou, “This is a wonderful day. I have never seen this one before.”

Steve led us in the Four-Way Test.

In addition to serving as greeter today, Rick ably filled in for Matt as Sergeant-at-arms. Ed Smith recalled the 1978 storm that damaged coastal homes. One of those homes was hammered again last week; this time the damage is so extensive that it now must be demolished. How sad. Jim’s sister is recovering from a liver transplant. On a long-planned vacation, Jim and his wife will relax in Curaçao. Pete thanked those present for the supportive messages following his son-in-law’s passing; Pete says his daughter is holding up well. Dr. Joe and Vickie celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary at a White Mountains resort. Carole is glad it is not snowing or raining. Susan had two closings. Brenda brought news of the new Rotary theme – the Magic of Rotary. Eric and Alice each expressed relief that last week’s storm did not involve personal injury. Tracy thanked first responders for their good work during after the storm. Heath happily reported his #4 sales standing nationwide at Keller Williams! Hannah’s father, a law-enforcement officer is back in his cruiser after recovering from an injury.

Pete says our CLYNK account now is at $1081.02.

“As we CLYNK into the brand new year,
We should start out with a hearty cheer,
Because our account is over a thousand again,
And that’s a great way for the year to begin!

Brenda held the winning ticket but drew the 9 of hearts and the 5 of clubs. The pot exceeds $400.

Brenda donated some of her needlecraft to the Foundation auction. Dr. Joe won with a bid of $50.

After Ed Smith ended his service in the U.S. Navy and returned to Ogunquit, he went about capturing various events on 8 mm film. He has since had those films converted to compact disc. Today he showed us scenes from back in the day of sportscar races on Ogunquit Beach, family and friends waterskiing, a Memorial Day parade and Ogunquit Fire Department parades and competitions. Thanks, Ed, for the neat look back!

Alice announced, with excitement, that the board approved a visioning session to be conducted by volunteers from clubs in district 7780. The session will take place on Wednesday, March 27, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Alice reported on recent club donations of $100 each to Grahamtastics Connection, Habitat for Humanity, LifeFlight of Maine, Historical Society of Wells/Ogunquit and Boots 2 Roots. She also thanked members for approving $500 to go to Sanford-Springvale Rotary’s fundraiser for unhoused people.

Rick will send out a Signup Genius for members to sign up to bring lunch to our February 1st and 15th meetings and to provide the moment-of-gratitude.

Upcoming events include:

District 7780 Midyear Luncheon – this Sunday

Respectfully,

Ed Seppa
