The repair crew co mpleted the task ahead of schedule so we were able to meet Jonathan’s as initially planned! We enjoyed a delicious lunch of salad, pasta and meatballs!
For the Moment of Gratitude, Dr. Joe spoke of the many interesting articles in recent issues of Rotary magazine including the steadfast fight against Polio. the bravery of Malala Yousafsai and the legacy of soul-music legend Otis Redding.
In Happy Dollars,
- Bob expressed sincere appreciation for your club. He and Cheryl will return to The Villages and will know about our winter weather only from a distance. Safe travels.
- Dr. Joe happily reported that one of the Biddeford-Saco Rotarians who was a winner in our calendar raffle donated $50 to her club and $50 to our club!
- Susan will get away to Cooperstown to visit her daughter. Not having an interest in baseball, the Hall of Fame is not on her itinerary!
- Eileen celebrated our beautiful foliage.
- Melanie is pleased that summer is almost over! She and Raney have plans for a “low water” river cruise on a bus!
- Barb also is headed to Florida and says she’ll miss us.
- Rick is delighted that Big Daddy’s will be open a few more weeks.
- Nancy was happy to be with friends both old and new.
As a change of pace, Pete read “someone else’s poetry.”
O suns and skies and clouds of June
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October's bright blue weather...
--- Helen Hunt Jackson
After lunch, Assistant District Governor Pam Gray read ticket number 114 belonging to Rick. He drew 3 of hearts and 9 of spades. Eric says there’s more that $250 in the kitty.
In club business,
- Jim reported that Wendy will be pleased to welcome us again at Saltwater Farm for our January through March meetings.
- Jim also reported that the board recommended a club donation of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation’s End Polio Now campaign in which our donation will be matched 2 to 1 by the Gates Foundation. Dr. Joe offered a motion to that effect (I did not notice who seconded.) The motion passed by a voice vote; there was no objection.
- Assistance is requested for the sale of bread and baked goods at Ogunquitfest next Saturday, October 24.
- The holiday luncheon for seniors and 5th graders at Jonathan’s will be on Thursday, December 10. Please mark your calendars.
- Anyone interested in an executive leadership position in the club in the 2027-28 Rotary year should notify Jim as soon as possible.
Jim welcomed Pam Gray and District Governor Michele Bois-Gilbody to the podium (photo below.) They presented certificates commending our club’s contributions both last year and the year prior to Rotary’s efforts to eradication polio.
Michele highlighted engagement as key to club’s success. People like to be part of something bigger than themselves. She thinks that projects and events during the less-hectic winter months are ideal opportunities to work at bringing new people into the Rotary experience. To underscore the importance of an unrelenting fight against polio, Michele shared an anecdote. At a recent dental appointment Michele happened to be wearing her Polio scarf. The dental assistant, a young CNA, commented on the scarf and asked, in earnest, “What is Polio?” Michele reminded us that we all are stewards of Rotary. Michele invited all to sign her district governor banner which is prominent in the photo of Michele and Pam.
In closing, Rick presented Michele with one his new Ogunquit calendars as a token of appreciation.
