After introducing our guests, Linda Jones, Jyoti’s mother-in-law, and Heath Ouellette, Ed Smith went to town fining late arrivals Connie, Nancy, John and Elizabeth Cutler. He also fined Connie for a call to the fire department on July 4th. It wasn’t that she should not have called 911, it’s that the grill that caught fire was on her porch!
Melanie was happy that Labor Day and the heavy summer traffic is behind us. Susan DeQuattro, who would be inducted as a new member later in the meeting, was happy to be with us. Not sure why George displayed his “very fat wallet” as he announced his estate sale on Saturday. There are lots of “delicious items!” Kerry Ellen announced George 81st birthday on Monday. Tracy has lost 40 pounds and “still working on it.” The bad news was the cancellation of the kite festival due to the arrival of Hurricane Dorian. The good news is that we are all set with tee shirts and kites for the 21st annual kite festival on September 12, 2020. Richard was $5 happy to be with us. Jyoti was happy over a very nice recent vacation and her 4th wedding anniversary. Perter the poet regaled us with,
“If you’re listening for something clever,
I shall now earnestly endeavor
to entertain you with the following good news.
Clynk is surging upward, ever upward,
and our balance now from that lofty view is $176.55!”
Nancy offered a happy five to applaud The Weekly Sentinel for the outstanding publicity of the kite festival. She was happy to have captured a photo of a beach wheelchair in use. (See below.) Tracy lauded both Nancy and Carol on that score. Ed Seppa was happy to call everyone’s attention to the Sentinel’s article about Senior College at YCCC. He also thanked Ed Smith for the use of the skunk trap. Joe was happy to report an upcoming five-day retreat in Rockport when he also will attend the Camden Film Festival. Joe also pointed out Rotary International’s mechanism for Hurricane Dorian disaster relief. Erin thanked Nancy for the fine article in the District 7780 newsletter. Emily and Erin weren’t happy that summer is coming to a close soon. Bob expressed pleasure that the Rotary-Shelter Box connection will be part of the relief effort in the Bahamas.
Kerry missed out on $45 in drawing the Jack of Spades and the 8 of Diamonds.
President Bob inducted Susan DeQuattro, our new club member. Melanie affixed the Rotary pin on Susan’s lapel. (See photo below.) Congratulations Susan!
John gave a brief overview of the annual holiday luncheon at Jonathan’s. John and his committee will be updating the invitation list over the next two months.
Bob discussed the October 6 district conference at USM. Our club has an opportunity to publicize our good work at that event.
Ed Smith talked about the importance of building a line of succession for the club presidency. Members are urged to consider stepping up to take on the responsibilities of vice-president, president-elect, and, ultimately, president.
The next board of directors meeting will be at 5:00 this Thursday at the Chamber of Commerce headquarters. We’ll have a social afterward at 6:00. We know of at least one visiting Rotarian who will join us that evening.
