Meeting recap of Friday, March 15, 2019
On this St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Richard shared with us an “old Irish blessing” that Pete provided:

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Fines were levied to a host of members did not wear green this day: Mary, Elizabeth Ford, Melanie, Gail, and Ray. Ed Seppa was fined for an error on the website indicating meetings at 12 A.M., not P.M. Emily again had no badge. I expressed the hope that the goodness of Rotary might counter the tragic events in the mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. I noted Ann Lee Hussey’s letter to the editor of the New York Times promoting vaccination. Emily knew that the State of Maine was founded 199 years ago. George knew that Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15. The citation Ides of March predates Caesar; it was a reference to the first full moon on the Roman calendar, which consisted of just 10 months starting with March. Joe again is happy to be back with his old club. Nancy was happy that the temperature was 54 degrees this day.  George is going to Colombia; he intends to bring back some videos of the schools there. Tracy says its “so much fun being here.” Pete distributed new club rosters. Let him know about changes if necessary. Pete offered a salute to our full-fledged Irish lass, Erin-Kelly McGowan Haye. Our Clynk account now holds $133.65. Emily is headed to Disney for two weeks. Erin thanked Pete for bringing Judith Woodbury to speak. Erin displayed some dresses she’s made already,  hoping to make 20 in total. In a nod to her Irish heritage, Elizabeth told us she found out in grammar school that food has color. She announced the creation of the “George Wilson fund” to keep him supplied with happy dollars. Melanie’s granddaughter was delighted to see Pete at the Irish Stepdancing event, giving him a big hug for reading to her class at the elementary school.

Carol held ticket #219712, drawing the 3 of Diamonds and the 9 of Spades. the pot stands at $54.

Before turning to a brief club assembly, we gathered outside for a new group picture.

Erin reported on the March 7 board meeting. Initial discussion on the 2019-2020 budget will be continued at the April 11 board meeting. All members are encouraged to attend. We approved $100 for George to get school supplies in Colombia. Erin thanked Nancy for writing a press release titled Happy Dollars Builds Communities. Together with the Wells club, we are supporting 3 students to attend RYLA this spring. At the social with Wells last week there was talk of doing more of the same in the future. Erin is prepared to host a March Madness this Thursday, March 21, at her home. If interested in attending, please let Erin know. District Training takes place at YCCC from 8:00 to noon on Saturday, April 6. Elizabeth Ford, Erin, Nancy and Joe likely will attend. All members are encouraged to sign up.

George will give a classification talk on April 4. Today was Ed Smith’s turn.

He was born in 1935; his grandfather Edward Weir owned the Cliff House. Ed graduated Wells High School 1953, joined the fire department, tried college, and spent 4 years in the US Navy aboard the USS Forrestal. Ed and his first wife had 3 children. He worked for a propane company, then 4 years at the Cliff House. He was on the board of overseers in 1962, involved in Cub Scouts in 1974, joining Rotary the same year. Ed met his second wife Julia at the Clay Hill Rotary Christmas party. After selling the gas company, he became Chief in 2006, retired, and was named Chief again in 2018. In his words, a ”rather full life that is not over yet!”

Until next time, “Be the Inspiration”,

Ed Seppa
