The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Meeting recap of Friday, August 16, 2019
Our guests were Heath Ouellette and Joel Sweeter, Dr. Joe Boyle’s son-in-law.
Folks were in good spirits this fine August day but that did not deter Sergeant at Arms Ed Smith from levying fines… to Carol for a phone call, to Richard for a snazzy new car, and to both Emily and Gail for missing badges. Pete offered these good words,

“No rhyme or cleverness today,
can’t think of anything to say.
Our live and active account
has in it the following amount.
$142.40.“

Tracy’s happy two-dollar bill celebrated the 80 kites assembled last week at the social. Pete and Jyoti will work on the remainder. Joel said, “Thanks for having me.” Dr. Joe was happy to have spent ten days with his Norwegian family and seven days with Joel’s family. Emily’s son, Robbie, turned 5. Ed Seppa was happy that the Yankees’ dugout at Yankee Stadium is adorned by a parrot named Edwin.  He also is seeking guidance for trapping a skunk!

Dr. Joe drew the 3 of Diamonds and the 3 of Spades. The pot stands at $26.

During club assembly, Bob explained that the contributions account has been increased by $1,500 to $4,000. The board hopes that Ray Hamlin can assist the Holiday Luncheon committee in unifying the invitee list. Ed Smith is the chair of a committee to explore ways to honor the memory of Mary Littlefield. At Elizabeth Ford’s request, a new contributions committee comprises herself, Carol Brennan and Ed Smith. Elizabeth Cutler, Gail Bergeron, and Richard Littlefield make up the new membership committee. The board also approved the inclusion of a "Rotary Minute" in each regular meeting and the designation of happy dollars to PolioPlus.

Susan DeQuattro’s membership application has been approved; she will be inducted at the September 6 meeting. Welcome, Susan! (We learned that Susan is Elizabeth Cutler’s kite-buddy!)

As he recognized Tracy to talk about the kite festival, Bob enthusiastically reported that low tide on Saturday, September 7, will be at 12 noon! Tracy handed out kite-festival posters and a sign-up sheet for the 8-10, 10-12:30 and 12-2 shifts. We will offer baked goodies with a donations jar nearby.

George showed some slides as he brought more recent members up to speed on the first Colombia project. The slides included some shots of young girls wearing the Dress-a-Girl dresses that George brought to Barranquilla on his most recent trip. He described the basics of a potential new project for a community center to provide nourishment to new and expectant mothers and infant children. Our club will investigate the possibility of involvement through either a district grant or a global grant. As we await more detail from Colombia, Joe Boyle, our Foundation Chair, will gather criteria regarding both types of grants.

In closing, I offer the following…

He is very clever you know,
not unlike one E. Allen Poe.
When Pete speaks of Clynk,
using verse so succinct,
We learn how the drinks turn to dough!

In Rotary,

Ed Seppa
