The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Recap of Thursday, April 7, 2022
I’ve misplaced my notebook, so I’m relying on memory here (good luck with that!)

Far and away the most important thing that occurred was Jen Fullmer’s presentation. Jen retired as a colonel from the US Air Force after 24 years of service. She accrued 2,500 flight hours on a B1 bomber serving in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Her talk to us today was a review of the efforts to secure the release from Afghanistan of an Afghan military officer, Hakim, and his family in the final hours as US forces withdrew last summer. Jen and a half-dozen contacts worked feverishly over the course of weeks, days, and hours to free the family, all of whom now are safely here in Maine. No words on my part can convey the intensity, fear and stress they all endured to reach the eventual happy end. Jen now works in various ways to support the resettlement of refugees in the U.S.

Our guests today were Jen Fullmer’s dad, Joe, who is celebrating his 90th birthday, Vickie Russell, and Rick Barber.

Many happy dollars today celebrated our return to Jonathan’s. Dr. Joe and Vickie are headed to Maryland for a family occasion. Big Daddy’s is opening this weekend. Erin is going on vacation. I’m sorry I cannot recall more happy dollar details.

Pete read another Clynk ditty. It had a subtle rhyme that resulted in delayed applause. Nice work Pete!

Richard drew two cards, but neither was the Ace of Hearts. Better luck next time Richard!

Susan asked for a volunteer to collect RSVPs for our regular meetings and Alice volunteered. Alice, we thank you. Susan also asked if anyone would like to take over the duty of providing the invocation, inspiring thought or Rotary moment at the start of our meetings. It’s an important and personally rewarding job; think service before self.

The board meets by Zoom next Wednesday at 5:00. The club meets again at Jonathan’s on April 21. Two days after that we will be selling bread and baked goods at Splash into Spring at the fire house. There are quite a few open time slots… go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0448a9af2fa64-ogunquit3 to sign up please.
