George put in a query dollar wondering if anyone else has received notification that their yearly Social Security benefit has been reduced by $500? Pete thanked Bob for his fine service as club president. The Clynk account stands at $144.45 as the result of nearly 10,000 containers being bagged! Emily reported losing her badge. On a happier note, she and her family have adopted a puppy, an Australian cattle dog. Ray (yes, we were very pleased to have Ray join us) put in a happy dollar to say “Hi.”
Emily had the hot ticket. She drew the Ace of Diamonds and the Four of Diamonds. The pot stands at $49.
President Bob reported that a Form 990 has been submitted to the IRS to maintain the club’s non-profit status. He noted that the club pulled in $498 in bread and baked good sales at Ogunquitfest. $78 was donated toward hurricane relief. We officially make the move to lunchtime at Bintliff’s on Friday, December 7. Because the Beachmere has a major activity booked in our meeting space, the November 2 meeting has been cancelled. The board of directors will meet in that time slot at a location to be determined. Bob thanked Erin for all her efforts in acquiring the latest beach wheelchair and the club’s newest free-standing banner. Bob asked that thank you notes be sent to Borealis Breads and When Pigs Fly. Bob then introduced our speaker, Julia Einstein of the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit.
The Historical Society, like so many other volunteer organizations, has experienced a decline in membership. Once it had 600 members, today the number is 338. Promisingly, there are 800 Facebook followers. The organization was founded in the 1950s and acquired the meetinghouse church in the 60s. The structure has had significant updates like LED chandelier lighting. The church bell has a history of its own having come from Paul Revere’s home. Crafted by Nailer Vickers in Sheffield England in 1868, the bell is in need of repairs estimated at a cost of $75,000. The museum conducts special programs, some for schoolchildren. Tracy’s Crickets Corner shop is a sponsor of the DIY History Games for Families. There’s Music in the Meetinghouse, History Walk and Talk events and Conversations with History. Next year, the National Woodies Club will come to the area. The York County Coast Star cited the Historical Society as one of six Movers and Shakers. Julia Epstein and Bob Cruickshank are pictured below.
To repeat, there will be no regular club meeting nest week although members are welcome to attend the board meeting. The nest regular meeting will be Friday, November 16. There will be a social meeting Thursday, November 8, at the Chambers of Commerce at 5:30 pm.
