The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Meeting recap of Friday, May 17, 2019
We devoted our time together to reflect on Mary Littlefield’s importance to us as a group and as individuals. The day was made particularly special by the addition of members of the Littlefield family and former members of our club. Jan Kearns, Mary and Richard’s daughter was here with her husband, Tim, and son Jeremy. Their granddaughter, Jyoti Goodwin-Jones, also was with us.

In response to Erin’s invitation, former Ogunquit Rotarians Eleanor Vadenais and Ben Oliver were with us to remember Mary. Mariah Erikson also came by with her youngest son Zachary. Several out-of-town folks visited: Bud Flannery, a member of the Rotary Club of Acton/Boxborough (MA) since 1962, Doreen Mulroney from the same club, and Diane Peterson, from Hartford, CT.

We shared happy and sad dollars.

Ed Smith continues to complain about the meeting time error on the website.
Eleanor was happy to be with us and sad that Mary has passed on. Ray was saddened at Mary’s passing. He had a very happy dollar to note Lisa’s graduation from YCCC. Kerry expressed condolences to the Kearns saying, “Thank you for sharing Mary with us.” Ben, who announced that he quit smoking two years ago, expressed love for Mary. Tracy’s folks celebrated 54 years of marriage. She was optimistic the sun might reappear soon. Bob Cruickshank was happy to be back in Ogunquit. He informed us that his wife is lucky to have been married to him for 47 years! He welcomed his friend, Bud Flannery and reported that he trimmed up the garden area at Rotary Park. Pete was happy that Diane Peterson visited. He thanked Chief Ed for straightening out the Rotary Park sign. Clynk stands at $179.80.  Connie appreciated the opportunity to "celebrate Mary’s wonderful life." Tim Kearns was happy to be here with his family. Erin was happy that the sun was trying to break through. She also had a sad dollar for Mary. Mariah expressed gratitude for Mary’s friendship and guidance.

Pete’s winning 50/50 ticket did not pay off; he drew the 4 of Clubs and the 8 of Diamonds.

Erin reports that Senator Bob Foley has provided a Maine State flag and an American flag for Rotary Park. Dr. Joe Boyle is donating a Rotary flag to complete the set. The auction of the C & J tickets was completed; Erin won the tickets with a bid of $50. Ed Smith auctioned off fresh-picked rhubarb; George won it for $10.

After we raised our glasses in a toast to Mary’s memory, Tim said, “Mary loved Rotary, she loved all of you and she really treasured your friendship.” Jan said, “Thank you for all that you’ve done.” Jyoti said, “Mary brought me to Rotary when I was just a little girl. Thank you for being a great family for us.” Bob told us that his son Michael got to know Mary quite well through his year-long visits to the Ogunquit Library. He said, “I think of Mary as being an angel in helping Michael become a priest.” Tracy remembered all the love in Mary’s voice whenever she spoke of anyone in her family. Tracy noted that, when Lisa Auben was club president, she cited Mary as Rotarian of the Year for being “the kindest, sweetest, most honest woman you could meet.” Pete told us that Mary and late daughter Terri were very kind during his wife Barbara’s long decline into dementia. “Terri was the best caregiver one could have.” He related several other very fond memories of Mary. Ed Smith relayed Richard’s appreciation for the prompt response of the emergency services team. Ben fondly remembered that Richard has a film record of his and Mary’s departure from the church at their wedding. Erin has a great memory of her mother and grandmother spending quality time with Mary at the library.

We are fortunate to have had Mary Littlefield in our lives. May she rest in peace.
