The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Recap of Thursday, August 4, 2022 Meeting
We were joined by guest Wayne Conrad of Stone Harbor, New Jersey.

For the meeting’s preliminaries Susan provided a moment of inspiration and I provided a brief Rotary moment explaining the origin of the 4-Way Test, the essence of which trails this recap.

Ed Smith was in prime form, fining Heath for starting the meeting late, Alice for arriving late, and Russ whose phone rang. Tracy thanked the group for the work done on the 2 Cents Sale. Erin did the same and then spoke excitedly about soon traveling to Kentucky to visit with her brother whom she has not seen in 6 years. He lives in Japan. Susan happily celebrated her birthday with her 10-year-old granddaughter. Rick and Russ liked Ed Smith’s tropical shirt. Bob was sorry he could not help at the 2 Cents Sale (Note: he did a lot of prep work the day before.) Bob reports that Rotary Park is in great shape (thanks in no small way to his efforts!) Richard is grateful for the overall effort on the 2 Cents Sale. Pete’s Clynk report featured some fresh (new, not naughty) verbiage.

This dry weather will end; but while waiting,
Let's keep up with our hydrating,
      Just consume all those liquids
Even the ones that are wicked,
And to CLYNK, with the empties, keep migrating!

Erin drew the Ace of Hearts!

Erin and Tracy distributed the financial data for the 2 Cents Sale. Bottom line – the club netted more that $15,000! A brief discussion centered on what went well and what improvements can be made next year. At the very end of the meeting, members wrote thank you notes to the businesses that donated prizes to the 2 Cents Sale.

Heath again conducted the Polio grab bag auction. Tracy won the bidding at $55 and walked away with a couple of pairs of socks. The $100 gift certificate is still in the bag. Erin auctioned off a blueberry buckle that she just baked. Kerry Ellen won it with a bid of $60; she gave the scrumptious-looking cake to Russ for the fire department. Heath announced that he’ll soon send out a list of the club’s committees. Members will be asked to sign up for at least one committee per person.

History of the 4-Way Test

The Club Aluminum Utensil Company was established in Chicago in 1923. Initially, its products were not available for purchase in stores, but Club Aluminum Cookware parties were popular until 1933, the onset of the Great Depression. During this bleak economic period, Club Aluminum filed for bankruptcy. A man named Herbert Taylor resigned as executive vice -president of Jewel Tea Company to take over at Club Aluminum Utensils. Mr. Taylor is credited with salvaging the 250-employee company. He created a guide of conduct for Club Aluminum personnel. He called it the “4-Way Test”. Ten years later, his “4-Way Test would be adopted by Rotary International. Herbert Taylor would become the president of Rotary International in 1954.

Respectfully,

Ed Seppa
