The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Recap of Thursday, February 17, 2022
Richard’s daughter, Jan Kearns, was here from South Dakota. Matt Buttrick joined us (and submitted his membership application!) Also with us was Ann Lee Hussey, the day’s speaker. Bob, Elizabeth Ford, and Erin were with us on Zoom. Susan brought sandwiches, salads, and cookies from Panera.

Ed Smith’s back discomfort has eased. His wife, Julie, had a health issue but is okay. Dr. Joe and Vickie will soon be great-grandparents! On the happy and sad side, Tracy won $400 in Erin’s Superbowl squares pool but parted with that and more in vet’s bills for her pooches. Alice had to say goodbye to the golden retriever who had seen her through thick and thin over the years. Russ’s daughter is buying a home. Richard was happy to have Jan here for a visit. Tracy and Erin each cited the successful Day of Warming last Saturday. Erin ecstatically announced that Crew OGT and Tito’s vodka donated $2,500 to our club from the Après-ski event last Saturday!

Erin remotely purchased 5 raffle tickets and one of them was the winner. Then, by proxy, she drew the Ace of Hearts, winning $72!

Now, a ditty from Pete to note a total of $931.35…

Planning for Ogunquit’s Fiftieth
Needs work and also a date.
You can help by CLYNCKing those empties
And that’ll help us celebrate!

(Regarding the date for the 50th, the committee is planning to have the event at Jonathan’s on Thursday, May 19, at 5:00 pm. Much more information to follow as time goes by.)

Brenda introduced her long-time friend, District 7780 Polio-Plus Chair Ann Lee Hussey. Ann Lee, a polio survivor, was first drawn to Rotary by its dedication to the eradication of the virus. She has participated in more than 30 polio-immunization projects internationally. Ann Lee spoke of her heart “growing three sizes like the Grinch” on a visit to a village in India where she met a young girl who reminded her of herself as a youngster. Last January marked the last case of wild polio in India.  Attention now is focused on Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to Ann Lee, the Taliban is allowing immunization efforts to proceed without interference. We learned of GPEI (Global Polio Eradication Initiative), a public-private partnership led by national governments with six partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the vaccine alliance. The global effort, in which Rotary plays a major role, has achieved 99.9% eradication worldwide. Now is the time to complete the task. Ann Lee asks that we contribute what we can. https://www.rotary.org/en/plus-polioplus

Susan touched on a few items of interest. We expect to be back at Jonathan’s for the April 7 meeting. Tomorrow, February 19, at 11:00 is the beach cleanup in conjunction with Canines for Clean Water. Reminder that the club will vote on the revised bylaws on March 3. Naomme will bring lunch.

(Note: I’ll be away on March 3. Would anyone like to write the recap next time?)

Sincerely,

Ed Seppa
